What Questions Should I Ask Before Hiring a Web Designer?

Ask 7 questions before hiring a web designer: who owns the site, how fast it will load, who builds it, whether it is made for you, how customers will find it, when it launches and what happens after. The answers tell you more than a portfolio does.

The 7 questions

  1. Who owns the site when it is finished? You should hold the domain, the site and every account.
  2. How fast will it load on a phone? Ask for a live site they built and run it through Google PageSpeed Insights yourself. It is free.
  3. Who does the work? Ask whether the people who design it are the people who build it.
  4. Is it a template or is it made for us? Neither answer is wrong. You should know which one you are getting.
  5. How will customers find it? The page plan should start from what people in your city search for.
  6. When does it launch? Ask for the date in writing before work starts.
  7. What happens after launch? Indexing, fixes and changes all need someone responsible for them.

What a good answer sounds like

A good answer is specific: a date, a number, a link you can open. A vague answer before the work starts becomes a delay once it has.

How we answer them

You own your domain, your site and your accounts. Our builds score 95+ on Google PageSpeed. Signature builds are hand coded by the team that designed them. The timeline is written into the plan before any work starts. You review on a private staging link and nothing goes live without your sign-off.

The question to ask yourself first

What should the site do for the business in 12 months? More enquiries. A better class of client. A brand that looks as good as the work behind it. Bring that answer to the first conversation and every reply to the 7 questions gets easier to judge.
